New York, NY, September 23, 2009:The New York Organ Donor Network is calling upon residents in the greater New York metropolitan area to help register thousands of organ donors next week in an unusual setting—during “viewing parties” to coincide with the premiere of a new CBS television series, Three Rivers. The first episode of Three Rivers airs on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 9 p.m.
What makes Three Rivers an appropriate centerpiece for the Donor Network’s donor registry drive is that it is a medical drama that goes inside the emotionally complex lives of organ donors, recipients and surgeons at the “preeminent transplant hospital” in the country, where every moment counts.
The Donor Network’s president and CEO, Elaine Berg, said: “This new TV series offers a timely opportunity to get the word out as to how organ donors save lives. We encourage New Yorkers to host viewing parties in their homes. All they have to do is to invite friends, neighbors, and family.
“Other organ procurement organizations across the nation are doing the same thing, and we hope that New Yorkers will really embrace this opportunity to increase the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors.”
Ms. Berg added: “It would be great if we can succeed on October 4 in making this the largest viewing party the New York metro area has ever seen.”
After viewing Three Rivers, party hosts are being asked by the Donor Network to conduct registry drives. “In fact,” said Julia Rivera, Donor Network communications director, “guests and hosts will be invited to add their names to the New York State Donate Life Registry. The registry is completely confidential and is administered by New York’s Department of Health. It is a database of legal consent.”
Ms. Rivera said that New Yorkers can enroll online in the New York State Donate Life Registry at www.SaveLivesNewYork.org
